Juniors take on Newton Shield Champions
Juniors take on Newton Shield Champions Elderslie welcomed the Newton Shield Champions, Old Ranfurly. The Champions fielded a strong team with the initial 3 players boasting handicaps of 2, 5 and 6! It was also a warm return for Aiden O’Hagan the current Elderslie Junior Open champion. The drives off the first were fantastic with Elderslie staying in touch, and commencing the tough battle. As Robert McIlroy, Scott McGrenaghan, Andy (Old Ranfurly Junior Convenor) and myself (Craig Campbell) watched the games it was exciting stuff. 2 games were quickly over (Lewis and Caolan), however the rest battled on to the last few holes. The overall results are detailed below, however it does not state what a great night it was between two clubs who have become firm friends. Well done to Jack Tourish whose first Newton Shield performance resulted in a superb win. Also of note are the two reserve players who won their matches. Junior Spring Meeting
Junior Spring Meeting 15 May 16 A lovely Sunday witness the young guys and girls play in the spring meeting. From 8 to 36 handicaps the play commenced………. 5 hours later the scores were counted and were we impressed with some fabulous results. Overall winner was Josh Campbell with a net 60 !! (gross 80) what a round, “the best of his life so far” he excitedly shouted. Closely followed by a net 62 from Caolan McGoldrick (gross 73). Overall a brilliant day that was made better with young Rhys happily hitting out of a bin at the 11th tee !!
Juniors play “John R McCarley” trophy
A glorious Sunday morning witnessed the first junior trophy competition of the year, the “John R McCarley”. 10 juniors teed off boldly lead by Josh Campbell, the current holder. It was great to see four 36 handicappers battle the course, even if it did take them 6 hours! With the in form Ben making a few mistakes and the wind taking its toll on the field we eventually had the two finalist. Congrats to both Lewis Greenless and Evan Cole who shot impressive net 67 and 68.
Juniors welcome Erskine for Newton Shield game
Elderslie welcomed Erskine on mon night. With Erskine’s first 3 players having low handicaps (2 – 8) we knew it would be a tall order to take anything from the game. Regardless Lewis, Ben and Heather lead the way and fought bravely to take all 3 players to the 16 and 17th hole. Behind them Caolan, Jack and Evan utilised their handicaps to try and restore some Elderslie pride. Jack played well but was slowly nudged out on the 16th, Caolan held onto the 18th where he gained a half and young Evan continued his winning streak with a brilliant victory on the 16th. Not forgetting the reserve match where Rhys took on Nieve, this resulted in a tight match which was halfed on the last hole. A great game played in a friendly manner; all the kids (and the adults) enjoyed the great food afterwards and the interesting speeches. Not a win but a superb learning curve, upwards and onwards. Scores: Lewis Greenless (8) lost 2/1 Ben Campbell (8) lost 5/3 Heather Mushet (11) lost 3/2 Caolan McGoldrick (11) Halved Jack Burns (15) v Kevin King (17) lost 4/3 Evan Cole (26) v Brandon McDonald (23) won 3/2 Rhys McIlroy Halved Results so far: Caldwell away – Halved Erskine at home – Lost 4.5 to 1.5
Juniors get a draw at Caldwell
A refreshing and lovely day witnessed the juniors play a fantastic game that ended in an overall draw. The juniors and adults were made very welcomed by both Vice Captain Brian and Junior Convenor Graham. A fantastic game went all the way, with the handicapped players earning all the points! This is a new format which dictates the first 3 juniors play off bare feet with the remaining 3 utilising their official handicaps. After our first 3 players lost their matches it was not looking good, however the youngsters battled on with two of our handicap players playing for the first time(Evan/Josh) in Newton Shield colours. Young Evan came back from 1 down with 2 to play to take it on the 18th, closely followed by young Josh who fought back to take it on the 17th!! Overall a brilliant day made all the better with a junior section within Caldwell that made us feel very welcomed and suitably at home. Scores: Lewis Greenless (8) v Stewart Percy (4) lost 7/6 Ben Campbell (8) v Alan Donnely (4) lost 6/5 Caolan McGoldrick (11) v Cameron Percy (14) lost 2/1 Jack Burns (15) v Kevin King (17) won 2 up Evan Cole (26) v Brandon McDonald (23) won 1 up Josh Gray (25) v Andrew Ward (26) won 2/1 Josh Campbell (no reserve member to play)
