History of Elderslie Golf Club

ELDERSLIE GOLF CLUB was founded in 1908 and on the 3rd of April 1909 was opened for play.
Elderslie Golf Club was constructed in 1909 on land owned by Elderslie Estates, who permitted various golf courses to be built on their extensive lands. Elderslie, the birthplace of William Wallace in 1270, and the course itself, encompasses the Newton Woods with all its Wallace connections. The course consisted of 15 holes for the Gentlemen Members and a 9 hole course for the ladies. Membership at that time stood at 275 Gentlemen and 75 ladies and on a wet afternoon on the 28th. of August 1909 Major Alexander McRae our first Captain invited Mr A.A. Speirs of Elderslie to drive the first ball down the first fairway to officially open the course.

Mr. James Barclay of Paisley Golf Club added his congratulations and expressed the hope that the two clubs would enjoy close relations in the future. Elderslie, Paisley, Fereneze and Cochrane Castle Golf Clubs still to this day play their Annual Friendly Matches.

The course is set in lush parkland with a large variety of trees, and follows a route from the 3rd tee to the 13th green round the woods, with ever changing views, and at the 9th green a magnificent outlook over the Clyde valley to Ben Lomond. Initially an extra 9-hole course was built for ladies and juniors, but this was taken over for grazing during the second world war and never reopened.

In 1924 James Braid was asked to report on the course, but he made no major recommendations, and the layout to-day is largely unaltered from how it was built in 1909, although 2 new holes were constructed on the old 9-hole course.

The attractive well furbished Clubhouse with large Lounge, family room with TV, dining room and snooker room is elevated to the rear with the large windows and veranda overlooking the 1st tee, 18th green and large open practice area. Full bar and catering facilities are offered between 10am & 11pm April to October with reduced hours during the winter months.
