Lost your c?

If there is no ‘c’ after your handicap it means that you have not played enough rounds to keep your competition handicap. You then are not able to play in stroke play competitions other than ‘for handicap’, and you cannot enter the club’s match play competitions.

Regaining a Competition Handicap

A player whose handicap has not been marked as a ’Competition Handicap’ (a ‘c’ after the number) can regain a Competition Handicap by submitting 3 qualifying scores. These scores will be from 18 hole competitions (such as medals) and Supplementary Scores. At Elderslie, in line with custom and practice, at least one of the 3 qualifying scores must be from an 18-hole competition.

Each of the scores will be entered in the player’s Handicap Record and shall adjust the Exact Handicap in accordance with the provisions of Clause 17 or Clause 22 of the CONGU regulations, as appropriate. Once the requisite scores have been entered into the player’s Handicap Record the Competition Status shall be reinstated (subject to a review by the Handicap Committee).

What are Supplementary Scores?

Supplementary Scores are scores returned by a player for handicap purposes, where the rounds are played at a time acceptable to the player’s personal circumstances and not in the club’s fixture-listed qualifying competitions.

Who can submit a Supplementary Score?

  • Players in Handicap Categories 2, 3, 4 [6-28(36)] are eligible to submit up to a maximum of 10 Supplementary Scores per year
  • Category 1 players with a handicap of 2.4 and under cannot submit Supplementary Scores from 1 March to 1 September. After 1 September, these players can submit up to a maximum of 3 Supplementary Scores to maintain their Competition Handicap status
  • Scottish Golf has permitted Category 1 players with handicaps in the range 2.5 to 5.4 to return up to ten Supplementary Scoresin a calendar year. Such scores may only be returned at your specified Home club
  • Any Category 2 players, reduced to a Category 1 handicap during the season, will only be eligible to submit such number of additional Supplementary Scores that allows them to maintain their Competition Handicap status

How to submit a Supplementary Score

  • A Supplementary Score may only be returned over 18 holes played over a Measured Course at the ‘Home’ club of the Player
  • An acceptable score must be returned under Stroke Play conditions and can be returned from any set of tees, including forward tees, provided that a Standard Scratch Score has been allocated for these tees by the Scottish Golf Services Team. This covers both the white and yellow tees at Elderslie
  • A maximum of 10 Supplementary Scores may be returned per year. Normally, unless otherwise agreed, Supplementary Scores are limited to one per week
  • A player intending to return a Supplementary Score must signify his intention in the Professional’s Shop before starting the round
  • The completed card, signed by both player and marker, must be placed in the box outside the Secretary’s office
  • If a player who has signified his intention to return a Supplementary Score does not return his scorecard, an increase in handicap of 0.1 will be applied
  • No CSS will be calculated, any adjustments to handicaps (up or down), shall be made in relation to the SSS
  • Stroke play returns will be subject to Clause 19 of the CONGU Unified Handicapping System 2016-2018 (Stableford/Nett Double Bogey) adjustment

Each Supplementary Score will be recorded by the Handicap Committee in the player’s Handicap Record, using the club handicapping software Club V1.

Aeration work to putting surfaces

8th April 2014

Due to the heavy rainfall over the Winter months we will be carrying out some additional aeration works to the greens.

All putting surfaces will be aerated with pencil tines, this is a non intrusive process and has no effect on how the greens putt.

Over and above this approx 10 or so of the greens will receive additional aeration work with larger tines. This will only be to certain areas of the greens and at no time will any flags be positioned on the areas with aeration holes.

In addition to this, two greens the 3rd and the 5th will have half the green aerated then once recovered the remaining half will be completed. These greens need more work than the others but again at no time will the flag be placed on an area with aeration holes.

Aeration is an ongoing process that is essential to improve the quality and health of our course

Deposit Needed For Towels

28th March 2014

Last year our supply of towels diminished by 20. Last week we purchased 20 new replacements and, already, we are down by 5. Reluctantly, from April 5th, we will be charging a £5 refundable deposit for all towels to help remedy this situation. We would also take this opportunity to ask members to check to see if they may have inadvertently taken towels home and, if so, to return them.

New Secretary & Treasurer

17th March 2014

Today sees the arrival at the club of our new Secretary, Kelly Forsyth. The Committee are delighted with this appointment and are looking forward to a bright future with Kelly at the helm. Kelly joins Margaret Brown who has been with us a few weeks already in the Treasurer Role. The "old" job has been divided into two part-time positions with Margaret and Kelly splitting the duties and the 9 to 5 weekday hours.

Medal Day:- Competition Entry & Paying for Sweep & 2s

Effective 01st April 2014

3rd March 2014

As of  Tuesday 1st April 2014 & for all subsequent Medal Competitions, the latest procedure for Medal Day Competition Entry, with associated Sweep & Twos collection, will be in operation.  Monies will be deducted directly from Member’s Swipe Card Accounts, (“Competition Charging”). This is being done to ease the administration of competitions and to simplify the payment process.

Entrants to Competitions can ONLY “Sign In” to Competitions at the PSI Terminal in the Pro Shop.

Please remember Swipe Card on Competition Days, otherwise you will be unable to enter Medal Competitions, as  now,  no administration will be done on your behalf.

Key points to note are:-

  • Once Swiped, ALL entrants must press Competition Button. This is independent of any Monies collection.
  • Competition Entry confirmation will appear at the bottom of the PSI screen.
  • As well as the Competition button, 2 additional Buttons will be available:- Two’s £1.00 & Sweep £1.00

Those Members playing "For Handicap" will also be unable to "Sign In" to Competitions.  In this case, please indicate to Pro Shop that you are playing "For Handicap" & they will pass to Match & Handicap the relevant information.  Completed "For Handicap" Score Cards should be deposited in the Handicap Box below the PSI Terminal in the Hallway.

Please note that every member, for Competitions only & not the Food & Bar Account, will be allocated a £2.00 overdraft, which will allow entry to Sweep & Twos, even though the Account is not in Credit. However, this facility can only be used once & Members must then “Top Up” their Accounts prior to the next Competition, otherwise they will be unable to enter Sweep &/or Twos.

If you are due any Monies from the Competition, then the following will apply:-

  • Twos - will be distributed into your Pro Shop account as it is at present.
  • Sweep - will either remain in your Swipe Card Account by default or be given to you as cash or moved to a different revenue stream on notification of this requirement to the Club Secretary.

You will be unable to perform Score Entry in the Pro Shop & returned cards will not be accepted by Pro Shop Staff. Score Entry will only be by Swipe Card only as Screen Index use will be blocked.  Please place all completed Competition Score Cards in appropriate Score Card Boxes in the Hallway next to the PSI Terminal.

All Competition entrants must still report to the Pro Shop prior to playing.

Early Season Work on Putting Surfaces

3 March 2014

In early March the greenstaff will vertidrain the putting surfaces in preparation for Graden Sand injection which we plan to carry out W/C 17th March.

As per the recommendation of the STRI, the sand injection will be carried out early season instead of holocoring as per the recommendations of the STRI

Holocoring removes approx 5 to 7% of thatch from the top 20mm of the playing surface. The graden process will allow us to remove up to 20% of thatch with effectively the same level of disruption.  John and his team following the work will use our new turf iron to keep the surfaces in as best condition as possible until growth comes and recovery is achieved.

Both the use of the graden and the turf iron are very much weather dependent so it may be a stop/start process depending on how kind or otherwise the weather is to us.

Update on Winter Work

3 March 2014

Despite the far from ideal weather conditions during the off season, good progress has been made with the Winter program.

All work has now been completed on the changes to the 18th hole and once growth comes the fairway will be shaped to emphasise the change in direction of the hole.

The new teeing ground has been deliberately kept as small as possible until we are sure the changes solve the issue faced. This tee will become worn and the green staff will do all possible to keep it in as good a condition as possible during the coming season. If no further issues arise then we will enlarge the teeing ground for 2015

New drainage has or is in the process of being installed at 1st, 8th, 18th and on the practice ground. Extensions to these areas and other new projects will continue over the coming years.

Court Case Verdict (29 Jan 2014)

Members may be aware of the ongoing Court Case lodged against the Club by one of our Limited Members in the small claims court.   Today (29/1/14) the Court Case finally reached its conclusion at Paisley Sheriff Court where the Court found in favour of Elderslie Golf Club.

The General Committee are pleased that this verdict fully vindicates the stance taken on behalf of the Club to protect our Constitution and decision making procedures.

Scorecards

As you may have noticed, we have not ordered any new scorecards and are currently using temporary black and white cards. We are awaiting the completion of ongoing alterations to the 18th hole which will most likely require a remeasurement of that hole. Please be assured that we will have new scorecards as soon as possible after these changes are implemented. We ask for your understanding and appreciation of  the saving in cost of not printing cards that would soon be redundant.

Club Dress Code

Over the last few weeks there have been a number of members and visitors in the Clubhouse with inappropriate attire. We would ask all members to remind themselves of the club dress code and dress appropriately. We would also ask that all members who introduce a guest to make sure that their guest also complies with the club dress code.

You can remind yourself of our dress code - click here.

Alterations to 18th Hole

You will be aware of the issue we have faced with reports of balls leaving the course and entering the garden of a neighour in Roundhill Avenue. To address this problem we have to make some alterations to the hole which we believe will improve the situation.

The 18th hole is one of the best on the course and it would not be our choice to make any changes to the original design. We have therefore, in conjunction with professional advice tried to keep the changes to a minimum to maintain the character of the hole as best as we possibly can.

Work on these changes will start soon and will be completed by the start of the 2014 season.

Proposed alterations to 18th hole.

  • Right hand rear section of tee will be extended to form teeing ground for Yellow and White markers.
  • First two rows of trees further down left hand side of fairway will be removed.
  • Mound some 50 yards off of tee will be reduced in height for better view of fairway.
  • Bushes and foliage in trees on right some 50 yards from tee will be removed to improve view of right hand side of hole from tee.
  • The “new” out of bounds stakes on right of hole will be removed.
  • All bushes, etc in large copse of trees on left hand side of hole will be removed and ground cut to semi rough height.
  • Centre of fairway will be moved some 10 metres to the left of current position to meet an industry standard of being 60 metres from course boundary.
  • Trees (saplings & whips) will be planted down right hand side of hole for future protection against similar issues.

Once all changes are in place we will monitor the situation going forward.

Divots from the Greens!

Over the last few weeks our greens staff have noticed divots appearing on a number of our greens (see photo opposite).  These divots appear to be the result of either players striking the green heavily with their putter or a player playing iron shots from the green.  Given the times that the divots have been occurring we are fairly certain that they have been caused by golfers - either members or guests to the club.

The General Committee would like to make it known that any member found making  divots of this nature on the greens will be the subject of disciplinary action.

We would ask all members to be vigilant and if they see anyone abusing the greens then please report the incident.
